What Is Glass Filter Media?
Glass is the clear winner for media in filters. Sure, the best will cost you more but as Henry Royce of Rolls Royce once famously said “The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.”
Ultra Clear is made from up-cycling virgin plate glass in a dedicated factory designed and operated specifically to produce a very unique glass filter media. It is offered as a direct replacement for filter sand and used in most types and designs of sand filters.
- It is made from virgin glass – Unlike our competitors, we do not use up-cycling. Unused plate glass is our raw material. This glass contains metal oxides that produce a slight negative charge.
- Production – Our sophisticated production facility takes this plate glass and produces particles with the sub-angular, spherical shape that is optimum for a filter medium that offers the benefits we insist on.
- Activation – This process ensures that the high surface area of the spheres is negatively charged to electrostatically attract and remove small particles and organics from the water. The metal oxide catalysts also ensure that the Ultra Clear spheres are self-sterilizing.
- Efficiency – The above system produces a specifically engineered material that is four times more effective at removing even the smallest particles than similar and sand.

What Makes It Superior?
Made From Virgin Plate
Unlike our competitors, we do not use recycled glass. The glass we process for our filter media has never been used for another purpose. It is still pure and contains the elements necessary for superior self-sterilising properties. No dangerous glass splinters are allowed to be present in the filter material.
LABORATORY TESTED AND DEVELOPED
Ultra Clear processes the plate glass into the perfect spherical shapes required for optimal water filtration in our own Ultra Water lab. Our process complies with ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System) and OHSAS 18001:2007.
HIGH TECH FILTRATION MEDIA
Our factory in Dunoon uses advanced manufacturing technology to crush the raw material into the optimal grain size and shape to produce a high-tech filter media with a slight negative charge that attracts undesired particles which are then released during a backwash cycle.
WHERE CAN IT BE USED?
Ultra Clear is a filtration media that is a direct replacement for silica sand in all types of filters used for the treatment of drinking water and waste water treatment. It includes pressure sand filters and RGF rapid gravity filters. These filters should be operated with the slowest possible hydraulic loading to optimize the filtration performance.
